Top tips for the perfect desk lamp

Category Decor

With the new year well underway, it is essential to ensure that your work area is well illuminated. Desk lamps provide vital task lighting for reading, writing, studying, crafting, computer work, and in fact, any task that you would do sitting at your desk. Melissa Davidson from leading lighting retailer, The Lighting Warehouse, offers her most helpful tips on what to look for when investing in a desk lamp:

Select good quality light: When choosing globes for your desk lamp, it is important to pay attention to CRI (colour rendering index), which indicates how true-to-life a colour will look beneath the light source in question. CRI is exceptionally important, as a high rating increases the ability to see contrast while reading and working. As such, look for LED globes with a high CRI rating of between 80 and 100 for your desk lamp. Colour temperature is also important - it is the measure of a light's appearance, often referred to as "warm" or "cool". LEDs with a colour temperature of between 2700K and 4500K are recommended for desk lamps.

Select a desk lamp that is adjustable: Being able to adjust your desk lamps allows you to fine-tune the placement of the light for specific tasks, and to minimize any glare. Look for desk lamps with various points of articulation, such as swing arms, swiveling heads, and goosenecks.

Choose the right size: The general rule of thumb for desk lighting is that it should be positioned higher than your head, and definitely not at eye level. Too low, and it won't provide enough coverage for your work area, and too high and the light will become overly diffused. For bigger desks, choose a lamp with extra reach to ensure full coverage. For smaller desks, it is advisable to select a desk lamp with a small base to preserve valuable working space.

Best placement considerations: Placement is best when the most shadows are minimized - so if you are left-handed, your desk lamp should be placed on your right-hand side, and vice versa if you are right-handed. If you have a computer on your desk, your desk lamp should be placed so that it illuminates the work surface and keyboard, and not the screen. For desk lamps with adjustable arms, it is important to ensure that it is long enough to shine light where you need it, and able to move out of the way when you don't.

Check out where the switch is: Operating your desk lamp should be easy, so be sure to look where the switches are located. The easiest switches to operate include base switches and touch-operation lamps.

USB charging: One of the latest advancements in desk lamps are models that include built-in USB charging ports that allow you to charge smart phones, and other electronic devices quickly and easily.

QI wireless charging:  Even better than USB charging, QI wireless charging is an extremely new technology in desk lamps. With this new technology, you only need to place your QI-compatible cell phone on the desk lamp base and voila - it will charge! No wires needed.

Add some colour: Who says that your study area should be dull and boring? Liven up your desk by including a pop of colour - there are lots of functional desk lamps that come in a variety of attractive hues.
